Khensani Mathebula’s story is one of passion and pursuing ones dreams. At 19, she got the opportunity of a lifetime, to pursue her dreams to study and become a modern dancer, and she packed her bags and headed to New York, USA.
And now, at only 24 years old, she is living her dream with Alpha Omega Theatrical Dance Company, as a professional dancer.
Khensani says she started dancing at the age of 3.
“I started dancing at the age of three and would attend ballet dance classes in the evenings and weekends because my parents wanted me to go to a conventional school, not an art school, so that I could become a lawyer,” she says.
She says that when she wasn’t dancing and pursuing her love of dance through dance classes, she was watching one of her favorite shows, ‘So You Think You Can Dance’. It was through this dancing show that she would be exposed to exciting dances by great US choreographers, and her dream to go to New York intensified.
“While watching the show I became a fan of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre which is one of the most acclaimed dance companies in the world and I dreamt of going there,” she says.
Her dream became a reality when she was accepted into the Bachelor of Fine Arts Ailey Program at Fordham University.
